How to Negotiate Better Prices

Scripts and Strategies That Work

Most prices are negotiable. Most people don't ask. Be the one who asks.

Why Negotiation Works

Companies Want to Keep You

Acquiring new customers costs more than keeping existing ones. They have retention budgets.

Published Prices Aren't Fixed

The price on paper is often the starting point, not the final number.

The Worst They Can Say Is No

And often, they say yes. A 5-minute call can save hundreds.

Before You Call

Gather Information

  • Your account details
  • How long you've been a customer
  • Your payment history
  • Competitor prices
  • Current promotions for new customers

Know Your Goal

Specific ask: "I want to pay $X" or "I want 20% off"

Be Prepared to Follow Through

If you say you'll cancel, be willing to actually cancel.

Negotiation Scripts

General Template

"Hi, I've been a customer for [X years/months]. I've noticed my rate
has increased, and I've been looking at other options. I'd like to
see if there's anything you can do to lower my bill while keeping
me as a customer."

If They Say No Initially

"I understand. Is there someone in your retention or loyalty
department I could speak with? I'd really prefer to stay, but
I need a better rate to make that work."

When They Offer Something

"I appreciate that offer. Is that the best you can do? I've seen
[competitor] offering [specific deal]. Can you match or beat that?"

If You Get Nothing

"Thank you for checking. What would you suggest I do to get a
better rate? Is there a better time to call back or someone else
to speak with?"

Negotiable Bills

Cable/Internet

Call annually. Ask for promotional rates. Mention competitors.

Success rate: Very high. Companies routinely offer retention deals.

Cell Phone

Loyalty rarely rewarded. Switch carriers for best deals, or call and ask.

Insurance

Shop and get quotes. Call your current insurer with competitor prices.

Medical Bills

Almost always negotiable. Ask for itemized bills. Request payment plans. Ask for cash-pay discount.

Credit Card Interest

If you carry a balance, call and ask for lower APR. Works surprisingly often.

Rent

At renewal time, research market rates. Propose a lower increase or ask for improvements.

Subscriptions

Ask for annual discount. Mention cancellation. Wait for retention offer.

The Practice Call

Before a High-Stakes Negotiation

Use AI to practice:

Help me practice this negotiation call.

Situation: [What you're negotiating]
My goal: [What you want]
What I'm worried about: [Your concerns]

Please:
1. Role-play as the customer service rep
2. Give me typical responses they might use
3. Help me practice my rebuttals
4. Point out where I could be stronger
5. Suggest better phrasing

Tips for Success

Be Polite

Agents have discretion. Kindness gets better results than aggression.

Be Patient

You might need to be transferred. Stay calm.

Time It Right

End of month, end of quarter — companies want to hit numbers. Better deals available.

Take Notes

Agent name, what was offered, when it takes effect. Confirmation numbers.

Follow Up

Check your next bill to confirm changes were applied.

When to Walk Away

Actually Leave Sometimes

If negotiation fails and competitors offer better deals, switch. Loyalty without reciprocation is expensive.

Come Back Later

Some companies have better offers at different times. Try again in a few months.
