The Keeper's Inventory
Estate appraiser Nell Okafor trusts objects more than people, and the dead lighthouse keeper of Gannet Rock wrote down every object he owned. Every spoon, every clock, every bulb matches his pencil ledger except one line: a prism from the old lighthouse lens, kept in a biscuit tin at the top of the stairs he fell down. The tin is empty. The ferry is canceled, a storm is coming in, and the friendly neighbor who found the body has just offered her a ride home.
