Privacy
Your privacy, in plain words.
We collect as little as we can, we never sell it, and we can't read what you write in the Studio.
Who we are
FreeLibrary.ai is run by Ilektra Radioti, an individual based in Greece. We're responsible for your data, and our data protection authority is the Hellenic Data Protection Authority (dpa.gr). If you live in the European Union or the UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) gives you the rights below, and you can always complain to the data protection authority where you live. Questions or requests: hello@freelibrary.ai.
What we keep, and why
| What | Why | Who can see it |
|---|---|---|
| Your email and password (the password is stored scrambled, never in readable form) | To give you an account and let you sign in | Only you. Never shown to anyone. |
| Your Studio books | So your writing is safe and you can write on any computer | Nobody but you. They're encrypted before they leave your computer. |
| Books you publish, their covers, your pen name | To show them in the Library, because you chose to publish | Everyone, until you take them down |
| Your display name, comments, reviews and public reading lists | To show what you chose to share | Everyone (private lists: only you) |
| Author profiles (picture, bio, links) and updates you post | To show readers who you are as an author | Everyone, under that pen name only |
| Your shelf, the authors you follow, where you stopped reading | To keep your reading in one place | Only you. Not authors, not other readers, not us in the app. |
| Reports you send (and your email, only if you add it) | To review problems and reply to you | Only the Library team |
| Whether you've turned on Explicit (18+) books, and when | To let you read those books, and only you | Only you. Delete it any time by turning the setting off on your Account page. |
| Your email, for a round-up when authors you follow publish (you can turn it off on your Account page or with the link in each email) | To tell you about new books and chapters you asked to follow | Only us, and Resend, which sends it. Authors never see it. |
| Your email, if you sign up for the newsletter, with when you signed up and confirmed | To send the newsletter you asked for (you confirm by email first), and to show you agreed | Only us, and Resend, which sends it. Leave any time with the link in every newsletter. |
| Feedback you send (and your email, only if you add it) | To improve the site and reply to you; it's also emailed to our team inbox | Only the Library team |
| Technical records (IP address, browser type, time of visit) | Kept briefly by our hosting providers to keep the site running and safe from abuse | Our hosting providers |
The legal bases: running the service you signed up for (your account, books, shelf), your choice to publish or comment, your consent for the newsletter (which you can withdraw any time), and our legitimate interest in keeping the site safe (reports, technical records).
Companies that help us run the site
- Vercel hosts the website. Your visits pass through their servers, which may be outside the EU; transfers are covered by the EU's Standard Contractual Clauses.
- Supabase stores accounts, the Library and your encrypted Studio books, in Frankfurt, Germany.
- Anthropic (Claude) is used only if you add your own Claude API key in the Studio. Then your writing goes straight from your browser to Anthropic under your own agreement with them, not through us. In the free "copy and paste" mode, you paste text into Claude yourself.
- OpenRouter is used only if you add your own OpenRouter key in the Studio. Then your writing goes straight from your browser to OpenRouter, and from there to the company that runs the model you picked, under your own agreement with OpenRouter, not through us. Some free models are run by companies that may use what you send to improve their models; OpenRouter shows each model's policy, and your privacy settings there decide which ones you can use.
- Resend sends account emails such as sign-up confirmations and password resets, from its servers in Ireland (EU). It receives your email address and the message, and nothing else. It also keeps the newsletter list, if you sign up.
- Stripe handles payments if you choose to support the library. You pay on Stripe's own page, so your card details go to Stripe, not to us; we receive your email address, the amount and the date, which we keep for our accounts as the law requires.
- ImprovMX forwards email you send to hello@freelibrary.ai to us.
We don't use any advertising or social media trackers, and no cookies for tracking. To see how many people visit and which pages they read, we use Vercel Web Analytics, which works without cookies and doesn't store anything that identifies you: it counts page views, the page you came from, your country and the type of device. Before a page view is counted, we remove anything private from the address (such as the codes in confirmation or "turn off emails" links).
To show authors how their books are doing, we count chapter views as plain daily totals (for example, "chapter 3 was read 12 times on Monday"). The count doesn't record who you are, your IP address or anything about your device, and authors never see who read what.
What's stored on your own computer
- A copy of your Studio book, your Studio settings, and (if you added one) your Claude or OpenRouter key, in your browser's storage.
- Your sign-in, and the unlocked key for your encrypted books. Signing out removes the key and your Studio copy from that computer.
- A note, for as long as the tab is open, of which chapters you've opened in this visit, so each one is counted only once. It's never sent to us.
These are needed for the site to work, so there's no cookie banner: there's nothing optional to agree to.
How long we keep it
As long as you have an account. When you delete your account, everything in it is erased from our database straight away: your Studio books, published books and covers, comments, shelf, follows and reading progress. Reports you sent stay, without any link to you. Technical records at our hosting providers expire on their own within 30 days.
Your rights
- See and download your data: Account → Download my data. Studio books: Studio → Settings → Download backup.
- Correct it: change your name on the Account page, and edit or take down your books any time.
- Delete it: Account → Delete my account.
- Object, or ask us anything: write to hello@freelibrary.ai. We answer within a month.
- Complain: you can contact the data protection authority in the country where you live.
Age
You need to be 18 or older to create an account, because the Library includes romance up to "steamy". Reading the Library doesn't need an account.
Changes
If we change this page in a way that matters, we'll say so on the site before it applies.
